DeKalb County residents have a powerful opportunity to make a difference by becoming Trusted Messengers in the effort to educate our community about adult vaccinations.
This initiative is part of a larger health equity project funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) through the R.E.A.C.H. (Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health) grant. Our goal is simple: empower local voices to share accurate, culturally relevant information about adult immunizations—including vaccines for flu, shingles, pneumonia, COVID-19, and more.
What Is a Trusted Messenger?
A Trusted Messenger is a community member—like you—who is trained to have informed, respectful conversations about vaccines and public health. Trusted Messengers aren’t doctors; they are neighbors, friends, faith leaders, barbers, beauticians, coaches, and parents who want to protect their community by spreading knowledge, not misinformation.
Through workshops, community events, and everyday conversations, Trusted Messengers build understanding and confidence around adult vaccinations, especially in communities that have been historically underserved or hesitant.
Why It Matters
DeKalb County is a vibrant and diverse community—but not all residents have equal access to healthcare information or trust in healthcare systems. Adults from Black, Hispanic, Asian, and other minority communities often face barriers to vaccination, including lack of culturally tailored education, language access, and historical mistrust.
The CDC’s R.E.A.C.H. grant enables us to change that—by investing in local leaders who already have the trust of their communities.
