Stitching History: Underground Railroad Quilt Exhibition at South DeKalb Senior Center
Monday, February 9, 2026 @ 10:00am - 2:00pm
The South DeKalb Senior Center Sewing Class, under the dedicated leadership of Wilhelmina Edwards, is excited to announce its very first Underground Railroad Quilt Exhibition, on display February 9 through February 28, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
An Underground Railroad quilt is more than fabric and thread—it is history stitched with purpose. These quilts are believed to have been used as symbolic guides during slavery, with specific patterns and colors representing messages of hope, direction, and survival for those seeking freedom. Each block tells a story, honoring courage, resilience, and the enduring spirit of a people determined to be free.
As you walk through the halls of South DeKalb Senior Center, you will find them beautifully adorned with handcrafted quilts created by our talented sewing class participants. Every piece reflects hours of careful work, creativity, and a deep commitment to preserving the art of sewing while honoring an important chapter of American history.
This exhibition celebrates not only the legacy of the Underground Railroad, but also the skill, dedication, and passion of our seniors who continue to keep this meaningful craft alive. We invite the community to come experience the beauty, history and inspiration woven into every quilt.
